The Final Four: Embracing Imperfect Wellness

By the time you get through the first eight months of the year, hopefully a few habits have stuck—maybe imperfectly… but they’re there. And that counts.

Let’s recap the journey so far:
January – Time Out
February – Sleep
March & April – Exercise
May – Declutter
June – Tidy
July – Cleaning
August – Admin

Not bad, right? So what about the final stretch?

September, for me, was gardening. Now, I’m no green thumb—far from it. My garden leans more “rustic and random” than a curated masterpiece but it ticks the box that gives you some relaxation, and quiet mind accomplishment. Im not a natural gardener so I kind of found my own style. Some might call it half-arsed… and honestly, that’s fair. But here’s the biggest takeaway of the whole year: half-arsed is better than not done at all.

In fact, lowering the bar might be the trick. When you give yourself permission to be imperfect, you’re far more likely to start—and keep going. Even the smallest effort, just a step above nothing, still feels like progress. It still earns a tick. It still gives that little dopamine boost. And if you stop? No problem. Just come back to it.

October was all about reading—anything at all. Aiming for a book a month sounded great… but didn’t quite happen. Still, there’s something enjoyable about picking up a book, even if you don’t finish it. And let’s be honest—browsing the library can be just as satisfying.

November turned into a month of projects, and I have loved this one. I have sanded and painted furniture, sewn clothes (relaxed & rustic styling for some), upcycled op shop finds, knitted, mended, done pottery, and even basket weaving. None of it perfect. All of it rewarding.

And finally, December: socialising. It might sound like an unusual “habit,” but it’s one we often neglect. Life gets busy, and suddenly we forget to make time for connection and fun.

It doesn’t have to be big—

a picnic in the park,

a casual game of cricket,

a movie and brunch,

a canoe or SUP adventure

or a day out exploring.

Its such a treat & we have so much to offer in our wonderful part of the world.

It’s a simple reminder that balance matters. A little light-hearted fun goes a long way—and there’s no shortage of ways to find it. So I hope there might be a little spark ignited in you to have a go at some wellness habits. We can all do with a bit more balance and light-hearted fun!
