Cascading … ongoing
Concurrent … more than one thing at a time
Compounding … one thing causes more things
These were the words used in the recent Independent Climate Risk Assessment Report to describe the challenges we face from climate change. They serve as a confronting reminder — another tap on the shoulder or hopefully the jolt we need to wake us up enough to respond with urgency.
It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed, even powerless, when faced with the scale of these issues. The temptation to turn away and focus on more pleasant distractions is strong. Yet, despite the enormity of the challenge, there are reasons for optimism.
We are acting on climate change, and those actions are having an impact. Global emissions are beginning to decline. Investment in clean energy has reached record levels. Governments and communities are working together on resilience and adaptation strategies. Progress may not be fast enough, but it is happening.
Importantly, meaningful change cannot rest with governments alone. That process is often slow, while individuals and communities can move quickly. Small, deliberate actions—especially when multiplied across many people—create powerful cascading, concurrent, and compounding effects. A simple commitment, such as changing just one habit each month, can generate a lasting impact.
October Climate Action – Choose Plant-Based One Day per Week
Shifting to plant-based proteins is one of the most effective ways to cut emissions. Studies show that plant-based protein can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90 times compared to animal-based sources. Animal agriculture is a major contributor to greenhouse gases, while plant-based options use
75–90% less land, 75% less water, and typically involve far fewer food miles. Just one plant-based day per week can save around 50kg of CO₂ per year.
The benefits don’t stop there:
- You can boost your health with nutrient-rich meals.
- You can explore new and inspiring recipes.
- You can motivate others to try it too.
- Most importantly, you’ll feel the satisfaction of taking meaningful action.
Tackling climate change may seem daunting, but individual choices matter more than we often realize. Each small step, like dedicating one day a week to plant-based eating, creates a ripple effect that strengthens both personal wellbeing and global sustainability. When multiplied across communities, these actions compound into real momentum for change. Progress begins not with grand gestures, but with everyday decisions—decisions that together shape the future we want to build.
