Why oat groats deserve a place in your pantry
Oat groats are the whole oat kernel, making them a wonderfully hearty, chewy grain that’s packed with fibre and nutrients.
Oat groats are the purest, least processed form of oats. They are the whole oat kernels with only the inedible outer hull removed. They have extra benefits over the more well-known processed variety. Such as:
• Maximum Nutrition: Unlike processed oat products, oat groats are the whole oat kernel with only the inedible hull removed. That means they retain more fibre, vitamins, and minerals in their natural form.
• Steady, Sustained Energy: Thanks to their whole-grain structure, oat groats digest more slowly than rolled oats. The result? A lower glycaemic impact and fewer blood sugar spikes throughout the day.
• Stay Fuller for Longer: Their dense texture takes longer to break down, helping to increase satiety and support appetite control between meals.
• A Better Bite: Forget mushy porridge. Oat groats offer a deliciously nutty flavour and satisfying chew, similar to brown rice, making them a versatile addition to both sweet and savoury dishes.
If you’re looking for a whole-food grain that delivers nutrition, lasting energy, and great texture, oat groats are hard to beat.
Using your rice cooker is one of the easiest ways to prepare them — simply set it to cook overnight for luscious creamy oats in the morning.
Ingredients
- 1 cup oat groats
- 6 cups water
- Pinch of sea salt
Method
The night before, rinse the oat groats under cold water. Add the groats, water, salt, and oil (if using) to your rice cooker. Select the Brown Rice setting if available. If your rice cooker only has a standard cook setting, simply start the cycle and allow it to cook. Wait till it switches to “Keep Warm” and leave overnight. In the morning, fluff with a fork and serve.
Portion it up and keep it refrigerated to reheat for a quick breakfast. Top it with stewed fruit for a super warming, loving start to your day.
